Posted : admin On 7/27/2022A new lacrosse champion will be crowned in Philadelphia this weekend, and if you're looking for one of the sport's traditional power programs, this isn't the tournament for you.
Defending national champion Denver took a seat early. Virginia? Not in the field. Johns Hopkins? Bounced by Brown. Duke didn't make the quarterfinals either, and Notre Dame fell to North Carolina last weekend.

Women's lacrosse is a sport played with twelve players on each team. The object of the game is to us.
But Maryland -- the tournament's top overall seed -- is still here for the fifth time in six years along with two other national seeds (Brown, No. 5 and Loyola, No. 7) and an unlikely contender (North Carolina).
Looking for a team to cheer for? All four teams with their eyes on the trophy have their merits.
No. 1 seed Maryland
Champions of Big Ten's regular season and tournament, the Terrapins have reeled off 15 wins in a row. Their last loss came on March 5 to then-No. 1 Notre Dame.
'Someone mentioned how many games in a row we have won, and the coaches all kind of looked at each other surprised,' Maryland coach John Tillman said. 'We don't judge ourselves on wins and losses. ... We realize where we are, and one bad five-minute period or bad quarter can really hurt you,'
Sure, everyone loves the underdog, and generally the top seed is anything but plucky. But when you consider how close Maryland has come to a title in recent years, it's conceivable that one might root for Testudo to finally get over the hump.
The Terps reached the title game in 2011, 2012 and 2015 with another semifinal appearance in 2014, all under Tillman, now in his sixth year. This time, though, they're entering as the favorites.
Tillman says each team is different, but this is one of his deepest and most experienced groups.
'Everyone I talk to says we don't have any great players, but we have a lot of pretty good players,' Tillman said. 'I'm not sure what that means, but people handle pressure differently. We don't talk about that stuff.'
No. 5 Brown
On the other end of the experience spectrum sits Brown, as the Bears are making their first trip to the semifinals since 1994.
Brown was a popular pick to get to Philadelphia, as it leads the nation in scoring (by nearly three goals per game), but its path to Saturday's meeting with Maryland hasn't gone according to plan.
The Bears' offense was so productive in part because it had two-time Ivy League Player of the Year Dylan Molloy leading the charge. Molloy leads the nation in points and assists and ranks third in goals per game.
Molloy, though, was injured in the Bears' first-round win over Johns Hopkins and is unlikely to play this weekend.
They will continue to lean on the nation's runner-up in points per game, senior Kylor Bellistri. Bellistri scored four goals and assisted on two more in the quarterfinal win over Navy.
'I was amazed at how much our men bought into the message of next man up and trust the system,' Brown coach Lars Tiffany said of Molloy's absence in the quarterfinals. 'Those are just words unless you embrace it, and they did, they really believed. Maybe that's indicative of a confidence and a swagger that this program has right now, but it was much needed knowing that arguably the best player in the country wasn't going to be playing.'
No. 7 Loyola Maryland
The Greyhounds don't have five final four appearances in six years, but they do have the most recent title of the bunch. Loyola claimed its first and only title in 2012 when it capped an 18-win season by stifling Maryland in the championship game.
College Lacrosse Odds
Only two players remain from the title run -- Defender David Manning and midfielder Jeff Chase -- and they logged a combined total of two games during the previous title run. But coach Charley Toomey is still in charge and certainly knows what it takes to hoist the trophy.
'David and Jeff were in the locker room then,' Toomey said. 'David is a captain for us. He's out in front of our team, he's vocal. He has been the voice, from the players' side, about the run. His message has always been to enjoy the journey.'
Loyola gets the bulk of its scoring from the attack position courtesy of Patriot League Offensive Player and Freshman of the Year Pat Spencer and senior Zach Herreweyers.
'I would be lying to you if I said I thought he was going to put up those kind of numbers,' Toomey said of Spencer. 'But I did see him settling in on the offensive end. He's just tough to cover.'
North Carolina
If it's lacrosse tradition you're looking for, North Carolina could be the team for you. The Tar Heels have four titles on their résumé, fifth-most among Division I teams. Their most recent win, however, came in 1991.
And if provided with truth serum before the season, eighth-year coach Joe Breschi wouldn't have picked this group, the one picked to finish last in the league, to reach the semifinals for the first time since 1993 -- which would explain his elation after the Heels' quarterfinal win.
'At the beginning of the season, it was almost as if guys were looking around for someone to make play,s because in the past we've had those types of players,' Breschi said. 'The offense would get stagnant, but they learned after a 3-3 start they needed to step up as a unit. The development of these guys is greater than a lot of teams I've had. The star power may not be there, but they're making a name for themselves as they progress.'
The charge for Loyola, as it has been for every UNC opponent this season, will be slowing down senior Steve Pontrello. Pontrello, who averages nearly three goals per game, has 20 more goals on the season than the next-closest Tar Heel.
Women’s lacrosse is a sport played with twelve players on each team. The object of the game is to use a long-handled lacrosse stick to catch, carry, and pass a solid rubber ball in an effort to score by ultimately hurling the ball into an opponent’s goal. Defensively the object is to keep the opposing team from scoring and to dispossess them of the ball through the use of stick checking and body positioning. Equipment required to play is different from the men’s. Women are only required to wear eyewear/lacrosse goggles, and a mouth guard. Their stick has restrictions too, it has to be a certain length and the pocket cannot be too deep but the lacrosse ball sizes are the same.
Colors appear to be tightly controlled in NCAA Women’s Lacrosse. Starting in 2008, gray was added to the list of colors approved for the goalie’s uniform bottom. Previously, the bottom portion of the uniform had to be either the team’s predominant color or black. While it is not new in 2008, the color of the ball must be solid yellow.
Rule 2: Equipment and Uniforms
The Ball
SECTION 5. The ball is smooth rubber of solid yellow color, not less than 20cm (7-3/4″) or more than 20.3cm (8″) in circumference. It must weigh not less than 142gm (5oz.) not more than 149gm (5-1/4oz.). It must have a bounce of not less than 1.1m (43″) nor more than 1.3m (51″) when dropped from 1.8m (72″) onto concrete at a temperature of approximately 18 degrees C. (65 degrees F.) – 23 degrees C. (75 degrees F.).
